Nick, Benji, Sabra, Joshua, Jeanine, Russell and…you?! The “So You Think You Can Dance” Season 7 audition tour has begun, and you could be America’s next Favorite Dancer. Auditions kicked off in Miami, FL, before coming to NYC, where DS caught up with the judges, dancers and, of course, Cat Deeley.
As we walked into the theater we couldn’t believe our eyes— seated in between Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman wasn’t Mary Murphy—it was the fabulous Mia Michaels! Surprised? So were we, but we couldn’t be more thrilled about having her fresh perspective back on the show. We took our seats just in time to see a sizzlin’ hot ballroom couple take the stage, and let’s just say they knocked our (and the judges’) socks off! Their energy was unbelievable, and we literally couldn’t take our eyes off them. They definitely had the complete package with what Nigel deems the 3 P’s you need when auditioning for the show: Power, Personality and Performance.
After seeing everything from tutus and pointe shoes to krumpers and contemporary dancers, it was obvious that every dancer needed to have all three Ps if they were going through to the choreography round. Nigel repeatedly reminded dancers that technical difficulty does not trump personality. With each season America is coming to expect more and more, so bring everything you’ve got and leave it on the dance floor!
Audition Advice From the Judges:
Adam: “Don’t audition, dance!”
Mia: “It’s better to dance bad than to dance bland.”
Nigel: “Wear clothes that are flattering to your body and make your limbs look long. If you’re short, don’t wear long shorts and a long shirt.
Our Fave Quotes of the Day:
Mia: “There’s nothing hotter than you right now.”
Adam: “Your mind-blowing connection is really turning me on.”
Nigel: “I’m still waiting for the season where the most technical dancer wins the competition. You’ve got to have personality!”
Mia: “What’s amazing about you is that you have athleticism, but you also have artistry. (Read more about finding the balance between athleticism and artistry here.)
