Remember when you first saw Travis Wall’s choreography on “So You Think You Can Dance”? What about when you swooned over the first episode of “All the Right Moves,” starring Travis and his super-cute dancing buddies Teddy Forance, Nick Lazzarini and Kyle Robinson? Well, get ready for all that excitement all over again, because the first tour of their company, Shaping Sound, is coming to a city near you this summer! Tickets for the tour are on sale now, so DS chatted with Travis to get the scoop.

Dance Spirit: Is there a theme to the Shaping Sound tour?

Travis Wall: Our concept was inspired by a quote from the original Peter Pan book: “You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always love you. That’s where I’ll be waiting.” We wanted to explore the idea of what happens in a dream and bring that to life on the stage. Are you dreaming or are you awake? Is this real or in your head? How do the characters exist and interact in the dream world vs. the real world?

DS: Who choreographed the tour?

TW: The choreography is a collaborative effort. I’ve been working on development of the love section, Teddy is taking the electronic moments, Nick is responsible for the high-energy, stylized pieces, while Kyle’s focus is on the partnering and contemporary. The real magic happens when our company comes together during rehearsals.

DS: Will we see the same dancers we saw on “All the Right Moves”?

TW: You can expect to see most of the dancers featured on “ATRM” on the tour. But we’re touring with a smaller company—we had 24 dancers on the show, but 16 on tour. As a company we have grown since you saw us on television. We are much more aware of each other in the same space and continuously challenge ourselves to take lessons, participate in workshops and we’re even working on our improvisational skills as a group.

DS: What do you hope audiences will take away from the performances?

TW: We anticipate that the majority of our audience will be young dancers—kids who have either taken our classes or followed our careers. The company hopes that audiences leave inspired and touched in some way by one of our stories. When Teddy, Nick, Kyle and I began our training, there were so many role models who we looked up to. To be on the other side of that and inspiring people by doing what we love is the best job in the world.  We’ll even be hosting a dance class in every tour city before the show, so students can experience what it’s like to dance with the Shaping Sound company.
