Pianists Get Some Much Deserved Recognition

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and the same sentiment definitely goes for a dancer. From the shoe makers to the costume designers, there are so many people that make up the world of ballet. And ballet pianists are finally getting some well-deserved praise.

The New York Times recently published an in-depth piece on ballet pianists, including New York Theatre Ballet’s musical director Michael Scales and New York City Ballet’s Cameron Grant, whose career as NYCB’s principal pianist spans 30 years. Grant’s face is very recognizable—he was featured in Ballet 422 and the trailer for Justin Peck’s Everywhere We Go—but hearing his appreciation for the dancers and his dedication to helping them the only way he can (by playing his best every day) is beyond inspiring.
