Sneak a Peek at NYCB's Newest Couture

September 22, 2015

Need some delicious ballet-meets-fashion candy to get you through this hump day? Let New York City Ballet—with assists from Women’s Wear Daily and several world-class designers—help you with that.

Yes, NYCB’s fall gala next week will be fashion-filled, featuring costumes by no fewer than five bold-name designers for no fewer than four world premieres. Choreographer Myles Thatcher is teaming up with Zuhair Murad; Robert Binet is working with Hanako Maeda of ADEAM; Troy Schumacher is partnering with Marques’Almeida; and Justin Peck is collaborating with Humberto Leon of Opening Ceremony and Kenzo (a pairing that, given the duo’s fruitful work together on Opening Ceremony’s runway show, promises to be especially amazing).

The fifth designer—Peter Copping, creative director of Oscar de la Renta—is giving an older ballet, Peter Martins’ Thou Swell, a serious facelift. And Women’s Wear Daily recently sent a photographer to capture Copping’s oozing-with-glamour redesign.

I do mean almost literally oozing. There is tulle. There are boas made out of tulle. There is satin. There is jewel-bedecked satin. There are capes. There are SERIOUS CAPES.

Basically, it all looks fabulous.

This isn’t the first time NYCB has collaborated with the fashion world. Thanks to the efforts of genius board member (and, as if it needs to be said, fashionista extraordinaire) Sarah Jessica Parker, NYCB has become perhaps the most fashion-forward ballet company around. But including the work of five designers—not to mention five choreographers—in a single performance? That’s some next-level stuff.
