Dance News

Last night marked the 70th annual Tony Awards, aka Broadway's biggest night, aka one of the BEST (and danciest) nights of the whole year. It's always a glitzy evening complete with fabulous performances from the Great White Way's hottest shows, super-fun opening numbers, inspiring acceptance speeches and tons of celebration. And last night's show did not disappoint in any of those categories. (Speaking of Broadway's hottest shows, pick up a copy of our July/August Broadway issue where we feature the latest and greatest from this season.)

Host James Corden opened on a somber note, dedicating this year's broadcast to the victims in Orlando. But then he got straight to business, breaking out an opening number that featured spoofs of iconic Broadway shows and classic musical theater choreo.

It was truly a night of Hamilton (unsurprising since the show scored the most Tony noms of all time) and Lin Manuel-Miranda's masterpiece snagged award after awardincluding the much-deserved Best Musical and Best Choreography titles. The incredible cast performance was introduced via video by none other than President Obama and First Lady Michelle and was literally EVERYTHING. Watch below and catch this month's DS cover stars and ensemble ladies Sasha Hutchings and Ariana DeBose!

Other highlights of the night included:

When Chicago celebrated its 20th Broadway anniversary with a fierce rendition of "All That Jazz" and its signature Fosse moves.

Shuffle Along's mind-blowing tap number.

The kids of School of Rock and their epic performance of "You're in the Band."

When salsa took over the stage, thanks to an energetic performance from the cast of On Your Feet!

Jane Krakowski's leggy dance moves and her splits (which she busted out while simultaneously singing her heart out!) in her performance for She Loves Me (skip ahead to about 1:45):
