Step 1/4

Stand in parallel retiré with your arms in first position.

Step 2/4

Plié and extend your lifted leg into a parallel arabesque while reaching your arms to the floor. Pick up a weighted medicine ball (2 to 5 lbs.)

Step 3/4

Stay in plié as you pull your back leg into parallel retiré and bring the ball close to your chest.

Step 4/4

Lift the ball overhead while straightening your standing leg. Repeat on the other side. Aim to do the exercise a total of five times on each side.

Step 1/4

Start standing in parallel retiré. Place your arms in first position while holding light hand weights (2 to 5 lbs.).

Plié and extend your lifted leg into a parallel arabesque while opening your arms to the sides.

Step 3/4

Stay in plié as you bring your arms back through first position and pull your back leg into parallel retiré

Step 4/4

Reach your arms overhead while straightening your standing leg. Repeat on the other side. Aim to do the exercise five times on each side.

I’m proud of my “comp kid” past! Dance meant everything to me when I was a kid, and I spent my happiest hours studying ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop for 15 years at my local Long Island studio, L.A. Dance Studio, and competing with its company. I majored in journalism at Hofstra University, and save for an early stint with the student-run organization Danceworks, my dance career wound down just as my journalism career ramped up. Most of my attention was soon diverted to my work with the school’s newspaper, student magazine and an internship in NYC. After college, I spent a few years as a business journalist covering the toy and consumer electronics industries and now I’m ecstatic that I’ve found a way back to my first love—dance!
