Capezio Sales Coming From Your Newest Fashion Intern

Hi Dance Spirit readers! My name is Carrie, and I am one of the newest summer fashion/editorial interns here at Dance Spirit and Dance Magazine. I’ll be keeping you posted with up-and-coming dancewear trends as well as my thoughts on various dance performances and classes.

A Westchester County, NY native, I just spent my past semester studying abroad in Florence, Italy and am now eager to be back in the states! I am going into my senior year at Syracuse University where I am double majoring in Magazine Journalism and English with a minor in Sociology at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. I have been dancing since the moment I was able to stand on my own two feet, decked out in the token pink tutu and silver tiara. Having studied all types of dance for the past 18 years, I am the most passionate about jazz and hip hop. Don’t get me wrong, every time I see Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake I become entranced with the entangled trauma of the classic beauty Odette. However, give me a Wade Robson or Shane Sparks routine, and I can’t wait to throw on my favorite pair of sweats and sneakers to pop and lock.

My favorite dance memories include performing at Madison Square Garden during the pre-show for a Knicks basketball game and dancing on my high school dance team each week with a group of my closest friends. I can’t wait to get back to SU this fall to hit the studios as a choreographer and dancer in the largest student club on campus, DanceWorks

With summer already on its way, I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to combine my two loves—dancing and writing—for what I know will be a truly rewarding experience. And, with summer comes a whole new season of trendy dancewear! We at Dance Spirit know you love your Capezio apparel which is why we know you’ll be pumped that Capezio is holding a nationwide one-day only sale on June 21st at all stores and online. They are offering 20 percent off all contents (including clearance items!) Whether you need a pastel-colored summer leotard, new ballet tights to replace those battered ones or some funky ballroom shoes, Capezio has it. So if you are feeling frisky for summertime, head on over to Capezio retail stores or log on to www.capeziodance and bank in on this bargain. See…I told you I had your back ;-)

How Paloma Garcia-Lee Manifested Her Dream Role, in Steven Spielberg’s "West Side Story"

On a rainy day in November 2018, Paloma Garcia-Lee got a call from her agent that brought her to her knees outside her New York City apartment: She was going to play Graziella in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story.

The call came after a lengthy audition process with Spielberg in the room, and the role, originated by Wilma Curley on Broadway in 1957 and later portrayed by Gina Trikonis in the 1961 film, was her biggest dream. In fact, it's something Garcia-Lee says she manifested from the day plans for the movie were announced in January 2018. "I wrote in my journal: 'I am playing Graziella in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story.'"

Am I Less Committed to Dance Because I Have Other Passions? (Spoiler Alert: NO!)

Let's face it—dance is HARD, and in order to achieve your goals, you need to be committed to your training. "Still, there's a fine line between being committed and being consumed." Dancers can, and should, have interests outside of the studio.

Not convinced? We talked with dance psychologist Dr. Lucie Clements and two multifaceted dancers, Kristen Harlow (a musical theater dancer pursuing a career in NYC and Kentucky) and Kallie Takahashi (a dancer in her final year at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts), and got the inside scoop on how having hobbies outside of dance can inform your artistry, expand your range and help prevent burnout.

Go Behind the Scenes of Annie Live! With Brittany Conigatti

Unwrap your candy canes, pour the hot chocolate and round up your fellow theater lovers: NBC is kicking off the Christmas season with its latest live-broadcast TV musical. Annie Live! premieres December 2 and features a star-studded cast, including Harry Connick Jr., Tituss Burgess, Megan Hilty and, as the title character, young phenom Celina Smith.

Luckily, people got a taste of what the special will entail when the cast kicked off the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with a performance last week. But since you’re never fully dressed without a Dance Spirit exclusive, we caught up with Brittany Conigatti, one of the young orphans and adult ensemble members in the show, to learn what it was like putting together a large-scale live production for the small screen.
