I'm really, really flexible. I know that doesn't sound like a problem—but it is! It's really hard for me to control the wonk. What can I do to build strength?
Lucky you! But yes, your bendiness means you're going to have to put some effort into strength training.
Focus on your hips and core. A strong midsection is the key to helping you "control the wonk." Before class every day, do a couple of exercises to engage your core—basic sit-ups and planks will do the trick. That'll get those muscles firing, so they'll be warm and ready to support you when you start dancing.
I'd also highly encourage you to start taking Pilates or Gyrotonic. Both techniques will build stability in your joints and muscles without compromising your stretch. Eventually, you'll have the best of both worlds—flexibility and strength!
