Let's Talk About Class

March 16, 2009
It’s quality versus quantity that matters!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how people take class.

I believe that many people subconsciously think that if they just show up for class, they’ll get better… But if you’re one of those people, I am sorry to say that you are mistaken. You might not even realize you’re doing it. But remember, to get better faster, it’s all about the quality of the class, not the quantity of classes you take. You have to do much more than just show up. Try these tips:

  1. RESPONSIBILITY. Make sure you correct yourself in class. You don’t have to wait for the teacher to correct you to realize you are doing something wrong and fix it.
  2. FOCUS.
Many times in class, your brain will begin to wander. For example, you think about needing to call your mom, forgetting to hand in that paper for school…or how some boy in school likes your best friend instead of you. FOCUS ON CLASS! Your main goal for being there is to get better as fast as you can. If you want to be the best, you have to concentrate on the moment.
  3. DEMAND PERFECTION.
Don’t ever be satisfied when you do something in class that is “perfect.” Congratulate yourself on your progress, but don’t limit it. You aren’t done. Every time you take a class, figure out a way to do it better. To get more turnout, to understand a transition better, or to demand a more solid style with a combination., etc.
