Dear Katie,

I got a big part in my spring recital, but I really, really don’t like the guy who’ll be partnering me—he’s rude and gives me lots of condescending corrections. What can I do to make things less awkward?

Olivia

Dear Olivia,

Congratulations on your role! How exciting. But having a partner that’s difficult is never fun. As hard as it is, try not to get defensive. Keeping the environment as positive as possible is important. However, having said that, don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself if something isn’t working on his part. You don’t have to be rude back, but don’t let him bully you, either. If things are getting really difficult, say something to your teacher. They can mediate the situation for you.
