Michelle Dorrance Is a Choreographer AND a Composer
First, a confession: I'm a sucker for site-specific dance. Maybe what I love most is how a site-specific piece makes you see an ordinary place's tiny details in a completely new way. Or it might be that as an audience member, I feel like I'm smack dab in the middle of the dancing when the choreo is adapted to the location. Aaaah, I can't decide! It's all so cool.
ANYWAY: Last night Michelle Dorrance casually changed the site-specific game with her Works & Process Rotunda Project at the Guggenheim Museum. You already know Dorrance as the reigning queen of tap, but did you know she's also a bona fide composer? Yeah, in collab with many of her dancers (oh hey, Claudia Rahardjanoto), she composed the mesmerizing original music you can hear in videos blowing up Instagram right now:
